Moreover, people aren't just using the Internet to keep in touch with friends or check sports scores; more than half are using the Internet to shop. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that in the year 2000 alone, Internet users purchased more than $26 billion worth of merchandise from online U.S. retailers.
